The Nasdaq composite finished Friday with a loss of 0.6% as volume edged down slightly.
Microsemi pierced its 50-day moving average during intraday trade, but made up some ground to close above that line. The stock ended the session at 21.35, a loss of 1.68. Volume rose threefold. The chipmaker late Thursday said fiscal third-quarter profit came in at 10 cents per share. That missed analysts' views by 7 cents, First Call said. Sales were also shy of Wall Street's $75.6 million target.
WebEx Communications slumped 1.24 to close at 28.57 as turnover more than doubled. After Thursday's close, the maker of software for online meetings said second-quarter earnings grew 32% to 29 cents per share. The stock sports the second highest Earnings Per Share Rating, 92, in the Internet Service Providers group.
Intuitive Surgical closed 3.04 lower at 69.40 in nine times regular volume. The stock gapped up Wednesday and closed 27% higher after the maker of surgical instruments reported second-quarter earnings up 186% to 40 cents per share. For the week, the stock was up 38%. It's up 31% from its 53.10 buy point.
