Tower Group found success insuring small businesses in the New York City area, largely by educating its clients on better risk management.
Now Tower is expanding into new markets.
An initial public offering in October raised $110 million, providing the company with the capital to expand outside its core area.
Tower used some of the IPO proceeds to acquire OneBeacon Insurance. The deal gave it secured contract renewal rights in suburban markets in upstate New York and Long Island.
Also, Tower recently acquired a company that gave it licenses in nine other states, mostly on the East Coast and in New England.
Tower's expansion plans are to sell insurance programs to independent agents nationwide. The company isn't ruling out more acquisitions.
