Dallas Fed: housing "unsettling'
Dallas Fed President Richard Fisher noted the "unsettling price increase we are seeing in certain housing markets." He also said the U.S. current account deficit is a worry, along with paying for Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. But "it would not be immodest for Americans to say the U.S. economy shines brightly." He said two reasons are global competition and the Fed's independence.
** China's economic rise isn't necessarily at the expense of the U.S., Fisher stressed. "We have proven time and time again that we thrive when we face up to the challenge of vigorous competition."
Consumer sentiment flat in July
The University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index was 96.5, the same as an early July reading and just up from 96 in June. Views on current and future conditions both rose. Confidence gauges have been mixed. The IBD/TIPP Economic Optimism Index and the Consumer Confidence Index fell last month. But the latest weekly ABC/Washington Post poll rose to a 2005 high.
