Byline: Row over handling regional traffic, writes Keith Wallis
RIVER Trade Terminal Co of Hong Kong is facing fresh legal difficulties after the government confirmed it was taking action against it for breaching its lease condi- tions by handling intra-Asian vessels.
The new legal wrangle comes about four months after the territory's Court of Final Appeal ruled the company was barred from handling regional boxships under the terms of its 1996 government lease.
The company last week confirmed it was still handling intra-Asian vessels with government agreement despite the court ruling.
Economic Development and Labour Bureau spokeswoman Yik Wai-king said: 'The government is pursuing the claim for damages arising from River Trade Terminal's breach of the land grant conditions.'
She declined to say how much the government was seeking in damages or how far the case had progressed.
