OCTAVIO Bertacin, the president of Brazilian flag dredging company Dragaport, has spoken out against Brazilian government moves to allow foreign dredging companies to tender for contracts in the country.
In June, the government's powerful National Waterways Agency, Antaq, pushed forward Resolution 434, which aims to break the Brazilian flag monopoloy.
Antaq director-general Carlos Alberto Nobrega supports liberalisation and so does Sergio Bacci, chief secretary for development of transport action at the ministry of transport.
They have lobbied hard for change for more than a year in the hope that competition will drive down prices and allow cash-strapped port authorities to pay for more dredging.
This would allow for bigger vessels to call, so keeping Brazil's export boom on track.
