Byline: Partnership will compete with private express delivery operators, writes Mike Grinter in Hong Kong
NATIONAL postal bureaux across Asia Pacific are poised to boost profitability at the expense of private express services such as DHL, UPS and FedEx.
Allan Chiang, postmaster general of Hongkong Post, said six postal administrations those of Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and the United States have committed resources and aligned their respective networks to create a single network to deliver a new level of service.
'Together, we have more than 261m delivery points throughout the entire network, as well as some 1.6m employees and 142,000 retail locations,' said Mr Chiang.
'This kind of presence is unmatched by any delivery company today and gives us a unique platform for providing extensive express services,' he added.
Post offices in Hong Kong and the mainland, South Korea, Australia, Japan and the US have from Monday implemented a system that would provide receipts to customers detailing extensive information including delivery dates and flights deployed to move their parcels.
