ABUSES and exploitation of seafarers still exist despite improvement, the International Commission on Ship-ping said in its final report.

The commission, under the chairmanship of former Australian transport minister Peter Morris, investigated issues of ship safety throughout 2000 and in 2001, published the contentiously titled report Ships, Slaves and Competition, which exposed abuses and exploitation in both shipping and fishing industries worldwide.

Subsequently tasked, with his fellow commissioner the former International Association of Classification Societies permanent secretary James Bell, with maintaining a 'watching brief' over the developing situation and industry efforts to improve, the commissioners have concluded that 'much has been done' to address matters of ship safety, security ...
