BRITISH oil major BP is reeling from another accident at its giant US operations with a fire at the Texas City refinery, writes Martyn Wingrove.

The world's second largest oil company has extinguished a fire at the Texas refinery just a few weeks after saving a large production semi-submersible in the Gulf of Mexico from sinking to the seabed.

Late last week a fire started at a hydrotreating unit at the huge refinery complex of Texas City. Although there were no casualties, BP has started an investigation into the cause of the incident.

Earlier in July, the production platform Thunder Horse came dangerously close to sinking when it listed 20 degrees after Hurricane Dennis swept through the region.

Last Friday's fire was also the second accident to occur at the Texas City refinery after an explosion in March killed 14 workers. That incident involved an isomerisation unit at the ...
