When Marek Belka replaced the corruption-tainted Leszek Miller as prime minister in mid-2004, the hope was that the change in leaders might help to reverse the slide of the governing SLD into political oblivion. However, with the SLD's support in single-digit territory, it now appears that many prominent members of the party, including Belka, are prepared to jump to the PD, a centrist party formed in late February. The PD's founders, who include Belka's deputy prime minister, Jerzy Hausner, are calculating that there is a substantial bloc of the electorate that still identifies with the more moderate center-left policies of the current government, but has lost faith in the SLD.
