Questions remain about the circumstances surrounding the arrest of at least 15-20 intellectuals, clerics, and government employees (some early reports put the total of detainees in the several hundreds) in mid-January. Rumors of the discovery of a terrorist bomb plot have not been corroborated, and government officials have only said that the detainees were organizing to undermine national security. While Sultan Qaboos is viewed by some in the region as too chummy with the US, and too accommodating of Western social influences, the fact that those detainees who have been identified are not Sunni Muslims casts doubt on speculation that the entire incident is proof of an emerging Al Qaeda ...
