The opposition alliance of the leftist FSLN and the center-right PLC is on shaky ground, as a factional battle within the FSLN has forced the party's leaders to refuse to cooperate in efforts to free the Liberals' imprisoned leader, former President Aleman. In response, the PLC has indicated that it might be open to supporting both the ratification of the CAFTA treaty and a plan to destroy the country's entire stockpile of missiles, both of which are opposed by the FSLN. Pressure from the US to eliminate the military's supply of Russian-made surface-to-air missiles has increased substantially in recent months, and Managua's reluctance to comply has led to the partial suspension of financial assistance from Washington and threats of further economic and diplomatic penalties.
