Recent polls have confirmed that either of the governing CPD's top two contenders for the presidency would easily defeat the candidate of the opposition APC bloc, former Santiago Mayor Lavin. Former Defense Minister Bachelet, the candidate backed by President Lagos' PS-PPD bloc, is heavily favored over former Foreign Minister Alvear as the CPD's nominee, the Christian Democrats, the largest party in the governing alliance, is supporting Alvear's candidacy, and has insisted on holding a primary to choose the coalition's standard bearer.
