The Parliament's approval of funding for the right-wing Flemish Interest, which in its previous incarnation as the Flemish Bloc was ruled ineligible for state support owing to its racist leanings, underscores the extent to which regional concerns continue to guide the political actions of the country's major parties. Although the reconstitution of the Flemish Bloc was a blatant attempt to do an end run around the court's ruling, the Flemish parties in the national Parliament feared the repercussions of sidelining a party from their region, and winked at the move.
