THE DEPARTMENT of Agriculture will soon impose stricter guidelines in issuing permits to meat importers in an effort to curb the abuses of unscrupulous traders, Agriculture Secretary Domingo Panganiban said.

To prevent the misuse of import permits, meat importers will be required to return the unused permits issued to them by the DA's National Meat Inspection Service and the Bureau of Animal Industry within a month, Panganiban said.

"We will recall the unused import permit and [the importers must explain] why they were not utilized within the specified period," Panganiban said in an interview.
