BARANGAY 22C Piapi along Quezon Boulevard in Davao City had one of the highest crime rates in 1996.
Crime lurked on every corner of its dark streets, with about three incidents reported to the police each month.
But just three months from the installation of street lights, through the partnership between the local government and the Aboitiz group's Davao Light and Power Co., crime went down 10 percent.
Policemen from the barangay said the street lights made it easier for them to respond to calls for help, especially from residents living in previously unlit areas.
A similar drop in the crime rate was seen in other barangays covered by Davao Light's street lighting program, thus, burnishing Davao City's image as a secure, world-class city.
