FIRST, the good news: last month's Cinemalaya's Independent Film Festival was so successful that the next one will be held not two years from now, as originally planned, but in 2006!
Kudos to Tonyboy Cojuangco for appreciating the value and effectivity of the new indie competition, and for quickly coming up with the seed money for the next filmfest's new batch of full-length film by the first-time directors.
More good news: aside from this year's 20-minute and full-length categories, a new one may be launched next year, inviting mainstream directors to come up with budget, digital versions of the films they really want to make (without having to submit to producers' requirements).
Hopefully, established directors will submit fresher, freer and more risk-taking films that would generate even greater excitement on the local movie scene than the 2005 competition has already effected.
Finally, we hear that some of the 2005 Cinemelaya movies may be distributed on the mainstream theater circuit by some established film companies.
