JULY has proved to be a very good month for star jockey Fernando "Dhunoy" Raquel Jr.
Raquel came up with a tactical ride aboard Wild Orchid and powered the filly to a record-ripping win in the fourth leg of the 2005 Imported Stakes Series at the Santa Ana Park yesterday.
Wild Orchid, a 3-year-old charger from Australia, had no trouble galloping through the seldom-tackled 1,800-meter route, clocking a record time of 1 minute, 52.6 seconds.
"Maganda ang umpisa niya, kaya nang pakawalan ko, maraming marami pa (She had a good start, so when I let her loose, she was still full of run)," said Raquel of the High Yield-Dove Orchid progeny who submitted dizzying splits of 13.5-22.5-25-24-27.5.
Raquel calmly sat on Wild Orchid as Trieste and Flying Princess fought for the lead and then vigorously roused his mount, who swept ahead nearing the far turn.
