(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
AN INQUIRER article about a school in Bohol where homework means helping one's parents and school work is something one does in school won the Outstanding Story for Print in the 2005 Lasallian Scholarum Awards.
The annual journalism contest honors print and broadcast media for their outstanding coverage of youth and education issues.
Couple Raul and Cristina Fabella and their daughter Vigile Marie, a freshman at the University of the Philippines School of Economics, received the award on July 29 for their article "Learning by doing could revolutionize RP education." They received P25,000 and a Ramon Orlina-crafted trophy.
The winning piece appeared in the Inquirer's Talk of the Town section on Feb. 20.
"Learning by doing" is part of the Dynamic Learning Process (DLP) at the Central Visayan Institute (CVI), a private high school in Jagna, a port town 63 km east of Tagbilaran City. The school is run by the Bernidos-Christopher, director of studies, and Maria Victoria, principal, both of whom have doctorates in Physics.
"[T]he basic feature of the DLP, the heavy emphasis on 'learning by doing,' radical trust in the youth's capacity to learn, learning as pseudo-play, and unparalleled transparency through simultaneous instruction are all accessible without the idiosyncratic features of CVI. Great courage is still required to push DLP," wrote the Fabellas, who visited the school while on vacation last December.
