LOS BAYENOS, Laguna-The Office of the Environment Ombudsman has recommended the filing of criminal and administrative charges against University of the Philippines at Los Baos Chancellor Dr. Wilfredo David for the alleged illegal cutting of two hardwood trees inside the campus last year.
In a three-page resolution dated July 4, Virgilio Carreon Jr., investigator of the Environment Ombudsman, endorsed the filing of charges David based on the complaint of environment lawyer Maria Paz Luna.
Luna is the counsel of the Kapatirang Delta Alpha Omega, a group of UPLB alumni opposing the alleged illegal cutting of trees inside the university.
Environment Ombudsman Wilbert Candelaria subsequently approved the resolution on July 7.
David denied the allegations in his counter-affidavit. He said the trees were termite-infested and that the cutting of trees was done in the interest of public safety.
The Ombudsman's decision came as David started his bid for a third term as UPLB chancellor.
