ILOILO CITY-After his controversial attacks on critics of President Macapagal-Arroyo, Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez has turned his attention to the University of the Philippines, calling it "a haven for people who seek the downfall of the government."
Gonzalez had called for the review of the UP charter because according to Gonzalez, the university should teach students to be "lawful" and "not to incite people to sedition."
These comments made him unpopular among members of the UP Community.
He had earlier received flak for criticizing former President Corazon Aquino, who called for Ms Arroyo to resign, to mind daughter Kris, instead of the affairs of the nation. He later apologized to the former president and Kris for his statements.
Students "should be a bit moderate" in campaigning against the administration because the university and the students' tuition are being funded by the government, Gonzalez told the Inquirer in a phone interview.
