CLARK SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONE-Local officials in Central Luzon on Saturday agreed to establish water councils to coordinate actions to stop an "impending serious water shortage" in the region in 2025.
The creation of the councils was one of the strategies outlined in a resolution adopted by more than 100 leaders in the region at the close of the two-day Central Luzon Integrated Water Resource Management Summit.
The strategies dealing with the looming water crisis as well as floods, drought and environmental degradation were discussed with scientists.
Ramon Alikpala, executive director of the National Water Resources Board, welcomed the move to localize the management of water sources and regulation of their use.
He said this was a "a step in the right direction."
The approach has taken off the ground just this year, beginning with Central Visayas (Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental and Siquijor), he said.
