Japan may have qualified for the World Cup and impressed at the Confederations Cup, but its' struggles against Asian opposition continued as Zico's team slumped to a surprise 1-0 defeat to North Korea at the East Asian championship on Sunday.

The Japanese, who finished as runners up in this competition when it was last held in Japan in December 2003, labored against a side they defeated twice on the road to Germany 2006 and now lie bottom of the standings after the first round of matches in this year's tournament.
