Island's spirit is a rum specialty
Yomiuri
A venture liquor company run by Okinawa Electric Power Co. has started marketing its first product, a rum made from sugarcane grown on Minamidaitojima island, Okinawa Prefecture.
The idea of making rum from sugarcane, one of the island's products, was suggested to the company by Yuko Kinjo, a former employee.
The power utility adopted the idea as an venture business, and Kinjo founded Grace Rum Co. in March 2004.
The company produces two types of white rum--Cor Cor, made from sugarcane syrup and priced at 3,100 yen a 720-milliliter bottle, and Cor Cor Agricole, made from sugarcane juice and priced at 4,100 yen.
