Formed in 1872, Otsuka Shoe Co. has outlasted two world wars and ever-changing fashions--even expanding foot sizes. Japan's oldest independent shoemaker now faces a battle to survive in the face of planned tariff cuts on imports.
Shinsuke Yamada, the firm's 51-year-old president, told The Daily Yomiuri he saw a hard road ahead. Nevertheless, he remains confident about the future of his firm, a supplier to the Imperial family.
"As a Japanese shoemaker we are against the government's plans to lower the tariff on shoes. Because of trade liberalization, the number of Japanese shoemakers and shoe retailers has halved compared with 10 years ago," he said.
