U.S. beef ban hits tongue eateries
Yomiuri
SENDAI
The number of restaurants in Sendai serving beef tongue--gyutan in Japanese--has plunged by 60 percent from 1-1/2 years ago due to an import ban on U.S. beef over fears of mad cow disease and the soaring price of Australian beef.
Gyutan restaurant operators are hoping that the government will resume imports of U.S. beef as early as possible, saying that otherwise the city specialty will disappear.
The ban on U.S. beef imports imposed in December 2003 gave an additional blow to beef tongue restaurants, which had already suffered from a decline in beef consumption following the outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in the United States. Each restaurant turned to Australia for their supply, but the price of Australian beef has increased sixfold over the past 1-1/2 years due to the limited supply and high demand for Australian beef.
