Govt to press for part-return of U.S. Army depot
Yomiuri
Japan will ask the United States to return part of the U.S. Army General Supply Depot in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture in return for the transfer of a new U.S. Army headquarters, known as a Unit of Employment (UEX), to Camp Zama in Sagamihara and Zama, Kanagawa Prefecture, government sources said Sunday.
Japanese officials will make the proposal at a meeting with their U.S. counterparts over the realignment of U.S. forces stationed here.
With the United States having notified the government that the new headquarters would take direct command only in times of contingencies on the Korean Peninsula, the government determined it would not run counter to the Far East clause of the Japan-U.S. Security Treaty.
The treaty stipulates the purpose of garrisoning U.S. forces in Japan is to maintain peace and security in the Far East region.
