General Freight Services is entering the trailer fleet management business to ensure it has enough capacity in place to handle its fall peak shipping requirements.

The Atlanta-based 3PL is leasing "several hundred" 53-foot rail trailers from the Vermont Railway, with the first 25 to be delivered this month.

General Freight Services cited BNSF Railway's decision this year to discontinue managing rail trailers as the reason for getting into the market.

"(It) forced non-asset based companies like General Freight to either exit the intermodal business or to secure its own equipment," the company said.
