South activist Brian Ashley has demanded the abolition of all World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) policies, as they have not contributed to the economic recovery of Africa.

In a statement on the G8 finance ministers proposed debt cancellation for eighteen of the world's poorest countries including Zambia, Ashley said the two institutions should be replaced with those that would ensure sustainable development for developing countries.

"It is obvious that economic recovery in Africa is incompatible with these institutions' conditionalities, which would largely offset any potential gains from debt …
