As this column is published I'm dealing with this summer's hot topic in a cooler climate. I'm in the mountains of western North Carolina leading discussions on religion in American politics. The subject is a natural for conferences and any number of journalistic essays these days.
In an interesting and provocative new book, "Divided By God: America's Church-State Problem _ and What We Should Do About It," Noah Feldman writes, "no question divides Americans more fundamentally than that of the relation between religion and government."
