FIFTY-SIX people were killed and six others seriously injured yesterday near Kano when the bus in which they were travelling plunged into a river, road safety officials and witnesses said.

A Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) official in Kano, Mr Hammed Ibrahim, told newsmen at the scene that only six passengers were rescued after the accident, and were hospitalised at the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital in Kano with serious injuries.

The bus was travelling from Lagos to Maiduguri when it veered off the road and plunged into the Gadar Tamburawa river, some 20 kilometres south of Kano. "So far 56 people have …
