ON MAY 15, Alexander Downer delivered a lecture at the University of New England on Australian foreign and military policy. The dust quickly settled on what was a quite controversial contribution to what should be a continuous dialogue. But the minister's critics, and they were potentially numerous, almost completely failed to take the opportunity to discuss or debate. They seemed out of their depth, so, using a familiar exit strategy, fell back upon personal abuse of an essentially self-demeaning kind.
