Pharisaical compassion and the Lesser Evil.(Detention and immigrant law)(Editorial)
THE PITY of the political debate about mandatory detention, the detention centres themselves, and the treatment of detainees, is that it is a political debate--it is dominated by hatred of the Howard government, hysterical point scoring, and pharisaical posturing. The result is that there is little prospect of any rational discussion about how to improve the humanitarian shortcomings which inevitably creep into any such administrative system, and which in the case of the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) seem to have had a corrupting effect on the behaviour of low-level officials.
