The Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) yesterday shrugged off protests by Tao Pun residents who are demanding that planned new train routes through their neighbourhood go underground.

Prapat Chongsanguan, the MRTA governor, said building the extended subway route from Bang Sue to Bang Yai district in Nonthaburi above the ground would save time and construction costs.

The operating costs of an underground line would also be much higher, due to the expense of installing and maintaining the subway ventilation system.
