Wellington, July 6 NZPA - The Government is giving Bay of Plenty councils an extra $7 million to help the region recover from last year's floods.

Prime Minister Helen Clark announced the latest funding today during a visit to the region. It brings the Government's flood relief aid to a total of $29 million.

Miss Clark said the July 2004 floods caused widespread damage to rural and urban areas in eastern Bay of Plenty.

``It has taken the local councils some time to compile the costs of their responses and to decide on what infrastructural repairs were required,'' she said.
