Jul. 25--Philadelphia's marketing and sales campaign aimed at attracting European visitors continued to pay dividends in 2004, according to the U.S. International Trade Administration's Office of Travel and Tourism Industries.
For the second year in a row, Philadelphia ranked No. 10 among U.S. cities for visits by business and leisure travelers, getting a 3 percent share of the total, the federal agency said in statistics released earlier this month. The government report counted 279,000 Western European visitors to Philadelphia in 2004, up from 257,000 the year before.
Fritz Smith, tourism director for the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the city has concentrated its four-year European sales effort in Britain, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. The number of visitors from Britain, Italy, Ireland and ...
