Family-owned businesses are notoriously difficult to maintain. In fact, most family businesses move out of direct family control within a couple of generations.
This makes US publisher John Wiley & Sons an interesting phenomenon. Founded in 1807, Wiley has been a family business for six generations. The current chairman of the Wiley board is Peter Wiley, and Wiley family members still have considerable interest in the business (see box).
