The balance of power in the workplace is inevitably shifting towards people who demonstrate 'right brain' capabilities, such as synthesis, empathy and big picture thinking, according to Daniel Pink, former speechwriter for Al Gore and author of A Whole New Mind: Moving from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age.

Pink delivered one of the most thought-provoking sessions at last month's SLA conference in Toronto.

Given that 'left brain' characteristics - such as a tendency to favour the rational, the analytic and the sequential - are often perceived as the hall-mark of the stereotypical info pro, it's worth taking some time to consider Pink's thesis.

He argues that there are three factors driving this trend - 'abundance', 'Asia' and 'automation' - and identifies key questions that will resonate for many information professionals.
