On October 27, 2002, the Brazilian people elected Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the leader of the Workers' Party (PT) and a former metalworker, to the presidency with 61% of the popular vote. This unusual result was partly a reflection of a gradual shift within the Brazilian labor movement from radical socialism as a political objective to more pragmatic political and economic strategies.

This bibliography, drawing upon diverse sources, sheds light on conditions in today's Brazil, with ah emphasis on selections about Lula and the Workers' Party. The main focus of most of the entries is economic, reflecting both the main challenge Lula faces and the top preoccupation of analysts concerned about Brazil's economic future under his left-leaning administration.

In addition to the more recent titles listed below, two older but informative books on the formation and early experiences of the PT are Rachel Meneguello, A formaçao de um partido, 1979-1982 (Rio de Janeiro: Editora Paz e Terra, 1989) and Margaret Keck, The Workers' Party and Democratization in Brazil (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1992).
