There are three inanimate objects in this story. The first is a comet named Tempel-1, a glob of ice, dust, and rocks around half the size of Manhattan island. Object number two is a spacecraft named Deep Impact, roughly as big as a Volkswagen Beetle. Object number three is a detachable probe, smaller than the average coffee table, carried by Deep Impact. Well, on Independence Day this year, 268 million miles from Earth, Object Two discharged Object Three towards Object One.
