That was close. For a minute there, it looked as though the House was going to cut $100 million from a $400 million subsidy bill for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Then cooler heads--and the moldy oldie "Save Big Bird" appeal--prevailed, and the threatened funds were restored. Big Bird will get his subsidy. The decision comes amid unprecedented controversy in public broadcasting, which began when the Corporation's chairman, Kenneth Tomlinson, had the nerve to suggest that some programs on PBS and NPR lean a bit to the left.
