The type of war fought in Europe in the First World War--with its heavy bombardments, mining and tunneling, caused a major change in the landscape. Villages, towns and forests were destroyed. Official War Correspondent CEW Bean wanted people back home in Australia to understand the environments the soldiers lived and died in, and the chaos wreaked on the landscape during the war. This paper looks at the background and processes of bringing the battlefields to the Australian public through the creation of relief (three-dimensional) maps, plan models and dioramas.
