Giants' Alfonzo to return from injury.

LOS ANGELES _ The Giants appear to be on the brink of regaining third baseman Edgardo Alfonzo, one of their top offensive performers.

Sidelined since June 13 by a strained left quadriceps, Alfonzo will begin a two-game injury rehabilitation stint as a designated hitter for Triple-A Fresno at Salt Lake City. Because the Grizzlies are visiting an American League affiliate (Salt Lake's parent club is the Los Angeles Angels), the D.H. rule is in effect, thus enabling Alfonzo to resume activity without playing defense, which could aggravate his injury.

Ideally, Alfonzo would feel comfortable enough to try playing a full game after this …
