A CAMPAIGN to save more than 200 after-school clubs across Northern Ireland got a lift yesterday.

Children gathered at Belfast City Hall to release 200 red balloons ETH one for every club facing the axe within the next few months.

The event was organised by the Child Care Lobby Group to highlight the lack of funding for early years and after-school childcare projects in Ulster.

Campaigners presented their petition to Baroness May Blood to pass on to Secretary of State Peter Hain.

Playboard, the out of schools organisation, is urging the Government to provide an interim lifeline of pounds 500,000 to save the clubs which are facing closure.

Chief executive Marguerite Hunter Blair said the voluntary out-of-school sector in Northern Ireland is Oon the brink of complete meltdownO.
