THE number of deaths in Northern Ireland where the super-bug MRSA was recorded as a cause rose to 44 last year, it was revealed yesterday.
MRSA was mentioned on the death certificate of each fatality and in eight cases it was recorded as the main cause of death.
Figures contained in the Registrar GeneralOs quarterly report for Northern Ireland also showed that the number of times MRSA was recorded as the cause or contributory cause has been rising steadily, year on year, for the past eight years.
In 1997 the number was just seven, but in 2002 it was 26 and last year it had reached 44.
The recording of MRSA deaths is not yet an exact science and further information on the extent of such deaths will be published later in the year.
