THE DUP yesterday demanded that the Secretary of State make an immediate statement to Parliament on plans to close 17 police stations in rural parts of the Province.

Leader Ian Paisley intervened by raising the controversial issue in the House of Commons during Business Questions.

He told the House the stations were in Ohigh security riskO locations and the plans were Ototally unacceptableO.

Mr Paisley told the Commons: OI am extremely concerned at the prospect of 17 police stations being closed in rural areas of Northern Ireland.

OSuch a prospect, particularly at this time in Northern Ireland, would be dangerous and I am calling upon the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland to make an immediate statement to the House on this matter.

OThe stations that are on the closure list are in areas where the police themselves indicate there remains a high security risk. Any moves of this nature are totally unacceptable.
