AMERICAN TRAVELER PRESS

Driving has become the American way to take a vacation and this publisher's Driver's Guide series offers strip maps and highway logs that provide mile-by-mile listings of things to see and do along scenic routes. New titles: Southwest Adventures (Feb.), covering 36 scenic drives through southern California, Nevada, southern Utah, Arizona and New Mexico; Sierra Adventures (May), covering the entire Sierra Nevada region; and British Columbia Adventures (May; $14.95 each).

ATLANTIC MONTHLY PRESS

Alaska: The Last Best Place (Aug., $22) by Grant Simons explores fishing hamlets, logging camps, urban centers and oil fields as it discusses environmental issues.

BERKSHIRE HOUSE

New to the Great Destinations series: The Charleston & Savannah Book with Coastal Islands and The Newpart Book with Narragansett Bay and Block Island. Also, The Adirondack Book by Elizabeth Folwell, the first complete guide since Seneca Ray Stoddard's in 1874 ($14.95 each).

BERLITZ

New 1993 Berlitz Travellers Guides (May) are on the American Southwest ($14.95), New England ($15.95) and Berlin ($9.95). The new Discover series, large-format, full-color travel guides that will replace the Blueprint series over the next two years, will offer guides to France and Italy in spring 1993; Discover Israel will foilow in late '93 ($17.95 each). The major new feature of 10 fully revised Pocket Guides and four featuring new destinations--Malaysia, Cancun & Cozumel, Sydney and New Orleans---will be quick-view front and back cover flaps that fold out to show maps, town plans, and useful phrases and expressions ($7.95 each).

JOHN F. BLAIR PUBLISHER

Afoot in the South (Apr., $12.95 paper) takes four distinct areas of North Carolina-the mountains, the Piedmont, the coastal plain and the barrier islands--and describes four or five walks in each section that illustrate the natural history of the area. In June, Touring the Eastern Tennessee Backroads joins Blair's Backroads travel guides.

BLUE PENGUIN PUBLICATIONS

Where to go that the entire family will enjoy? Answers will be found in Family Travel: The New Vacation Guide far Families from 8 to 80 ($29.95; $19.95 paper) with descriptions of more than 2500 trips. COUNTRY ROADS PRESS

Sailing enthusiasts will pore over New England Under Sail: A Guide to Sailing Ships, Ferries, and Historic Vessels ($12.95 paper) for information on sailing and cruising along the coast, a directory of vessels, whale-, bird- and seal-watching trips, and more. The Seasoned Traveler's Guide to Northern California ($10.95 paper) covers the northern coast, including the Redwood Empire, Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Peninsula. Four new titles are being added to this publisher's "signature series" of state-by-state country roads travel guides: Illinois, Indiana, New Hampshire and Kentucky ($9.95 each, paper). The Country Roads series will add another 19 titles throughout 1993 and '94.

CROWN PUBLISHING GROUP

From Clarkson Potter: Glorious Gardens to Visit in Northern California: 65 Gardens Within 3 Hours of San Francisco-- From Mendocino to Carmel (Apr.) provides travel directions and information on restaurants, tours and more. This is the third revised and updated edition of Away for the Weekend: Southern California: Great Get-aways Less Than 250 Miles from Los Angeles for Every Season of the Year (May).

From Harmony Books: Where the Waters Divide: A Walk Across America Along the Continental Divide (June, $23 cloth) is the story of two hikers' adventures crossing the Continental Divide.

Bed & Breakfast U.S.A., 1993 (Jan., $14) has been completely updated; Thirty-Six Views of Mr. Fuji: A Memoir of Japan (Nov., $21) by Cathy N. Davidson is the author's account of discovering Japan.
