In advanced countries, corporate entities are increasingly taking over the responsibility of providing social services, especially for communities where they operate. This, they believe, is a way of giving a token back to the society, which made it possible for them to prosper.
There are however, detractors to this noble idea. They fear that as global companies take on more social responsibility, they will, by the increasing substitution of state provision by corporate provision impinge on the democratically elected governments.
There are also those who believe that the acceptance by corporate officials of social responsibility undermines the foundations of free society. They believe that social responsibility of business is to increase profits, and make as much money as possible for their shareholders.
Research has however shown that companies that survive longest are those who see their role more than just profit generators, but as members of the community that accommodates them.
