Referring to China, Napoleon reportedly said, "Don't wake the sleeping giant." By now, China has woken up. Today, the most important issue for the world is not Iraq, Iran becoming a nuclear power or the EU's future, but the place China will take in the international system. Even medium-sized countries such as Germany and Japan were unable to take their place in the world without causing world wars when they finally caught up with the developmental level of the leading countries. If China manages -- as Japan has done -- to reach the West's per capita income levels, the Chinese economy will be equal to nearly double the size of the U.S. and EU economies together. And that is to happen in the next three to four decades.

For us the problem is how to adjust to this mind-boggling …
