India has 12 major ports at Chennai, Ennore, JNPT, Kandla, Kochi, Kolkata, Marugao, Mumbai, New Mangalore, Paradip, Tuticorin and Visakhapatnam.

The Major Port Trusts Act, 1963 regulates all these, except Ennore.

Ennore is run by a limited company. Visakhapatnam leads the rest in cargo traffic handling. It controlled 13 percent of major port traffic in 2005.

Cargo traffic growth in 2004-2005 was 11.3 percent.
