A DOCTOR at BelfastOs Royal Victoria Hospital who was jailed for a year yesterday faces deportation and being struck off for downloading and distributing child porn on the internet.
Belfast Crown Court heard how senior registrar Biju Rama Mohannan Nair MohanOs life is now in ruins after being just a month away from qualifying as a consultant in the cityOs Royal Victoria Hospital.
Judge Patrick Lynch told Mohan: OIt is tragic that someone with your capacity to give so much to this community has besmirched that situation to the extent that you will never again be able to practice in this community.O
The 38-year-old orthopaedic registrar, from Glebe Road West in Newtownabbey, pleaded guilty to 32 sample counts of downloading over 3,000 images of child pornography, over 460 of which were in the higher category four and five, depicting children having sex with adults and sado-machosim, between 1999 and last year.
Mohan also admitted one separate specific charge of distributing images between June 1999 and July the following year, Owith a person of similar interestsO.
Judge Lynch said that while Mohan, according to probation and pyschological reports, does not present a danger to children himself, some of the images he had downloaded were so serious that only a custodial sentence was appropriate.
